러일전쟁 발발(1904년 2월) 직전 고종 황제가 이탈리아 국왕에게 보낸 비밀 친서가 발견됐다. 서울역사박물관은 26일 개막하는 기획전 '로쎄티의 서울, 1902_1903'에 이 문서를 공개한다. 카를로 로세티는 해군장교 출신의 지리학자 겸 외교관으로 1902년 11월부터 1903년 5월까지 제3대 이탈리아 영사로 대한제국 수도 서울에 주재하면서 당시 서울과 서울 사람들을 사진과 기록으로 남겼다.

'짐의 좋은 벗 의국(義國) 군주 폐하께'라는 문구로 시작하는 이 친서는 고종 황제가 1903년 11월 23일에 쓴 것으로, 러일전쟁이 터지면 대한제국은 중립을 지킬 테니 도와달라고 요청하는 내용이다. 의국은 이탈리아를 가리킨다. 친서에 밝힌 대로 이후 대한제국은 1904년 1월 21일 전시 중립을 선언했으나 일본은 이를 무시하고 2월 개전과 동시에 일본군을 상륙시키고 서울에 진주했다.

이 친서는 로세티의 후임인 아틸리오 모나코 판리공사(瓣理公使ㆍ영사급)가 이탈리아 외교부에 보냈다. 당시 함께 전달한 보고서에는 "한국의 황제님께서 저를 비밀리에 불러 아무도 이 편지에 대해 알지 않았으면 좋겠고 누구에게도 공개하지 말라고 지시하셨을 때 긍정적인 대답을 올릴 수밖에 없었다"고 쓰여 있어, 풍전등화 같던 나라의 운명 앞에 고종황제가 얼마나 고군분투했는지를 생생하게 알 수 있다.

이 친서는 이번 전시를 공동주최하는 주한 이탈리아대사관의 세르지오 메르쿠리 대사가 이탈리아 해군과 외무부 아카이브에 로세티 관련 자료를 찾아서 보내달라고 요청해 받은 것이다. 서울역사박물관은 "황제가 주한 외교사절을 직접 불러 내린 친서이고 이탈리아 외교부에 확실히 전달된 것을 확인할 수 있는 공식 자료라는 점에서 역사학적 외교사적 의의가 있다"고 설명했다.

선글라스를 쓴 고종황제의 모습, 미국인 의료선교사 알렌이 나귀를 타고 왕진을 가는 모습 등 19C 말 조선의 풍속을 생생하게 느낄 수 있는 사진들이 최초로 공개됐다.

알렌(1858~1932)은 1884년 주한 미국공사관 의사로 우리나라에 들어와 갑신정변 때 부상을 입은 민영익을 치료한 것을 계기로 고종의 어의(御醫)로 활동했다. 1885년에는 최초의 근대식 국립병원인 광혜원을 설립해 서양의술을 알리는 데 힘썼다.

Two middle-aged Korean gentlemen walking down the street. They wear a traditional Korean costume, echogorie and epajie with eturumagie that is tied with two long ekorume on the upper part of the coat. Their epajie are tied with etaenime at the lower ends of trousers. Both of them have echumonie, that contains money, under their waists. Their hat, called a ehukripe or commonly a ekate is made out of horsehair. Their shoes are ekomusine. The sunglasses reflect a modern attire among the upper-class Korean gentry.

This porter carries more than 12 various-sized clay pots, stacked safely in his A-frame. These jars, called a 'siru', were an important part of daily life. They were used to steam rice cakes. 'The jars are made in special kilns through a method of reduction: flames and air are mixed into a fierce heat. Pine twigs are used to keep the flames intense, and the kiln's smokestack and fuel-hole are closed to intensify the heat. The clay ware controls the humidity and helps purify the jars.' A rickshaw ('illyokko') is usually a light, two-wheeled hooded vehicle drawn by one or more persons. This picture shows a one-wheeled rickshaw with attendant. The rickshaw may look less luxurious, but possibly more comfortable to sit on than the ordinary palanquin which is hollow inside.

A group of young boys and girls look over something in the street. They wear the jackets called a echogorie and pants called a epajie. Both boys and girls have long braided hairs. Girls have etaenggie at the end of the braids. Their costume would have been worn only on festival days, in this case (because of the heavy winter clothing worn by them) almost certainly on the Lunar New Year, which occurs in late January or early February.
