최근 그리스에서 벌어진 시위를 주목하지 않을 수 없다.

시위의 와중에 15세 소년이 경찰에 의해 피살되면서 파괴적 폭동으로 발전한 그리스사태는 그 원인(遠因)이 경제의 침체와 청년실업에 있다고 현지 보도들은 분석하고 있다. GDP성장률은 유로국가 최저인 3%에 머물고 있는 데다 전체 실업이 8%인 데 비해 청년층의 실업률이 21%에 이르고 있다. 교육의 질, 지도층의 부정부패, 법치의 부재(不在), 연줄에 얽힌 출세주의 등 여러 요인들이 사람들을 거리로 내몰고 있다. 거기에 야당지도자, 대학교수, 무정부주의자 등이 청년층의 불만에 가세해 불을 지르고 있다. 그리스의 폭동은 지금 전 유럽의 도시로 확산되고 있다.

Riot police fired tear gas at youths today after more violence broke out across Greece in response to police shooting dead a 15-year-old in Athens.

This morning’s rioting in Thessaloniki saw gangs of young people setting fire to rubbish bins before the riot police moved in forcefully to quell the unrest.

The violence began on Saturday night when a teenager was killed by police in a midnight confrontation in an inner-city district frequented by extremist youths.

As news of the shooting spread hundreds of hooded and helmeted protesters poured into three central districts in Athens, hurling petrol bombs and stones at shopfronts, banks, parked cars and squads of police trying to control the mayhem.
