Thedevelopment of technology has enabled man to utilize the energies of nature, including the power of the atom , as a substitute for human labor, theredy creating an affluent society in which the consumption of material goods is looked upon as a virtue.

But the development of technology has failed to satisfy man's spiritual desires and has failed to turn the earth into a paradise. instead, pollutants produced by modern industry injure man and deface nature. Even more dreadful, however, than the physical pollution has been the spiritual pollution.

By emphasizing exclusively the material aspects of life, technology has increased man's competitive instincts and greed rather than developing his spiritual potential. Friction between individuals, between classes, and between nations has intensified as the gap widens between the rich and the poor on all levels of human life. In the end, man has become isolated from society and isolated even from his own inner being.
