Hudson River pilot Chesley Sullenberger tells of 'surreal' landing

The pilot who glided a US Airways Airbus safely on to the Hudson River in New York after a bird strike has described the experience as "surreal" and said that there was "calm on the outside, turmoil on the inside".

In his first public comments on the daring splash-landing, Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger said that the silence in the cockpit after both engines lost power was "shocking".

Mr Sullenberger was talking to the US TV sports channel ESPN the night before the Super Bowl, where he and his crew were given a standing ovation.

The 58-year-old, a former Air Force pilot, has been hailed a hero for safely landing the Airbus 320, which lost its engines after striking a flock of geese shortly after take-off from LaGuardia Airport on January 15. All 155 passengers and crew survived, many of them plucked from the wings of the plane by passing ferries.

Describing the moments after the engines were knocked out, Mr Sullenberger said: “It was very quiet as we worked, my co-pilot and I. We were a team. But to have zero thrust coming out of those engines was shocking ­– the silence.”

Mr Sullenberger and his wife, Lori, are to appear on the CBS programme 60 Minutes on Sunday after a battle between the networks to get the first interview with America's newest heroes.
